The best birthday ever.
Sep. 6th, 2002 04:42 amThis has been the best birthday ever.
Wednesday night I went up to Philly and DJd at Nocturne, Patrick Rodgers' Wednesday night dealie at Shampoo. Which is an absolutely beautiful club -- on par with Nation, and they get about 600 people a week. There are two all-ages upstairs rooms - one is EBM/electro/metal (??) and one is '80s/punk/new wave. My room (the room with the bar thank goodness!) was "a little bit of everything" [setlist to follow soon] and I was to DJ all 5 hours, by myself. I'd never done this before and was quite nervous. But the traffic gods smiled on us and despite a 15-minute-late start we got there right on time. We even beat Patrick! I had a GREAT time, played a little bit of everything (some goth, some industrial, some synthpop, some more goth, some more industrial, some old-school and some goofy stuff). Cathy got Patrick to order a beautiful bouquet of flowers for me, and we had a birthday drink at midnight. By 2 a.m. I wanted to keep going! We went to Patrick's and I made eggs, we hung out with some people and then crashed hard. (I am still fighting a cold.) It was a great night.
Got up in the morning and drove back to DC, where I dropped off my stuff, opened my b-day present from my mom which was hilarious (my family has a crazy sense of humor!), packed up other stuff, took Cathy home and went and got food for the bands, picked her back up and headed down to Nation. The bands arrived and sound-checked, and I had two hours of stress between 8 and 10 p.m. (Anyone I yelled "Shut up!" at when they started to say "Happy bir-" I apologize. I only wasn't wearing my "busy hat" because I was too busy to go and get it!)
Finally Unto Ashes came on, and they were great. I was gratefully and pleasantly surprised by the number of people who got into their beautiful, medieval, 4AD-style goth. They had a great show and I was happy that we were able to have them.
Then, the Cruxshadows! Forget about me; I was thrilled to have been able to give them the opportunity to play at a venue that is worthy of their talent. One of their best shows, if not the best, that I've ever seen ever, and I've seen them what, 8 times. I was hoping Rogue would climb up on the balcony, but maybe next time. And he did get me up onstage (he tricked me by pulling me up with everyone else during "Marilynn, My Bitterness") to wish me a happy birthday.
Let me tell you, I cannot describe the feeling of having 500 people wish you a happy birthday. It's both shockingly humbling and freakily-surreal-weird. Thank you to everybody. I really mean that. Thank you SO MUCH for making this the best birthday of my whole life. Thank you Cathy and Sixx and Tony and Kangal and Carolynn and Eric and everyone who signed my poster and everyone who dressed goth and the Cruxshadows and Unto Ashes and Patrick and everyone at Shampoo and everyone who wished me a happy birthday and Heather and Mom and my sisters and Sean and Gopal and - damn I just can't name everybody.
I am exhausted. Me go to bed now. Still have to do Dollhouse tomorrow. Happy birthday Seth. Happy birthday all the Virgos. :) And good night.
