Save Purgie!!
For those of you in the DC area:
One of my most fondly remembered institutions needs your help.
Purgatorio was founded by my good friend Sean Regan in November 2000. Against my advice it was held at Club Hell in Adams Morgan. Well, hardly any freaks live in the city and only those who do find it convenient to go to Adams Morgan, so it wasn't doing too well... in an effort to help boost the numbers, I agreed as a "minor scene celebrity" to come in and do a DJ set.
And yes, that's where it all started...!
Alas my illustrious amateur DJing didn't save the night, but moving to Dr Dremo's in convenient Arlington did. By the following summer, and with DJ Vlad on board, we were seeing an average of 50 attendees -- some weeks up to 80!! This in spite of hard liquor! The new Purgatorio was a great place to hang out midweek, socialise with friends, enjoy a beer and hear eclectic and innovative music there was no chance of hearing at a large dance event. Vlad and I had so much fun coming up with different themes and movies for each week: East Coast vs West Coast night, Covers night, David Bowie tribute, spotlighting different labels, and the many CD release/City Morgue parties. We were able to host bands like Mors Syphilitica, The Brides and JIVA who wouldn't have been able to play at a bigger venue like Alchemy. Most special of all was the number of our good friends who, like myself way back at Club Hell, were able to come in and try their hand at the decks for the first time. Some of them have gone on to great things (
pizza_tram I'm looking at you!) while others just wanted to have a chance to showcase their excellent musical taste. It's not just "real DJs" who love music and have something to share -- and to teach me a few things too!
I've moved to London now, where I can go to the Devonshire Arms any evening of the week, enjoy a pint and listen to DJs play goth and industrial music. DC-ites aren't so lucky, you've only got Wednesdays. DON'T WASTE THEM!
