The DJ swap for Dollhouse and Ceremony had been in the works for a while, and I was originally supposed to split the time with an electro-industrial DJ. So I'd be playing my usual diet of goth, dancey goth, and more goth. But it turned out that Kelly (also a Goth) had traded with him, so both of us had to cover all the bases. Yay fun -- I get to play some beepy stuff and some stompy stuff too!

We woke up around noonish, and after a too-lazy "morning" got on the road. Fortunately I had cleaned Trixie out so there was just enough room for the three of us. Cathy pointed out a really neato lighter at the convenience store that became my conversation piece for the weekend - purple with a skull with red eyes that light up when you light it! COOL! A loooooong drive and a stop at Taco Hell later, we arrived at Kelly's place, where we had just enough time to change and head over to the club.

Club Laga has a really nice layout. We came in the back way, or actually the front way since the main door they use for the entrance is off an alley. The club has a NICE big dance floor, a few tables, and some steps up to a small area with more tables. The bar is behind this big fence. Pennsylvania liquor laws strike again -- you can have all ages in a club, but all alcohol has to be kept in this tiny "booze ghetto" where it seemed 3/4 of the crowd remained for most of the night. The DJ booth was huge, I loved it! And I didn't need an equipment tutorial because what do they use there but "Ronan 1.0" (aka the Numark CD Mix-1, the first rig I had). After setting up and making up, I took the first set, which never bothers me since I can play flowy-goth. We split the first hour, then did 45-minute sets the rest of the night, and finished up with an hour tag team.

Man those Pittsburgh kids are request happy. They filled up FOUR PAGES! But, there was one kid who was dancing to Switchblade Symphony at 9:15 so I was happy. The bartender let us smuggle our drinks out of the cage and into the DJ booth too. I got to play a lot of fun stuff, although Kelly used up a number of bands I wanted to play. Heheh. I met Brian (DJ Black Badtz) who was really really nice, and Jeremy from ThouShaltNot was there, and I met a couple other people but I didn't get much chance to socialize because either one person was having a long conversation with/at me or I was in the booth. The vibe was really good, and several people gave me compliments on my set. One girl said "I wasn't going to come out tonight because the music usually sucks here, but I'm glad I did because your set rocked!" :) I had a great time. Great space, great variety, probably the best one-room scene night I've been to. I'd go there every weekend if it wasn't so damn far away!

The Setlist

After the club closed, I searched in vain for an after party (apparently they don't do that there), and we ended up going to a diner instead. The food was awful IMHO. Cathy and Kelly got the buffet, and I ordered an omelet, which was thin and salty and the home fries were undercooked. We are SPOILED by the Diner. Fortunately I whined and didn't have to pay for it. Then back to Kelly's where we watched videos of This Ascension and her first Faith & the Muse show. Goth grrlz rule.

We slept as well as we could with no air-conditioning. Whine whine, I know, but it was VERY VERY VERY hot. The following day Kelly played tour guide and showed us a couple of funky stores and this used CD place with more bands I've never heard of than I'd ever seen before. Then we went for ice cream -- yummy! -- and visited the Center of Learning, this huge gothic cathedral with classrooms in the styles of many different countries. Most of them were locked though. We walked around a bit, and took some pictures, then the feets were hurting so we went out for sushi and then hit the road. Kelly was a great hostess, I'm looking forward to doing it again soon!
