Of drinks and rumours
Sep. 25th, 2005 03:37 pmWow! I swear, spend a few days away from LiveJournal and look what happens.
Apparently people in D.C. are very angry with me regarding an unpaid bar tab at Schadenfreude. I admit we did not pay the bar tab. We were meant to have free drinks (24 bottles of beer or equivalent), it was stated in the contract. At the show we were offered half price drinks. I did not want to be arsey to Vlad and insist that he provide exactly what the contract stated -- and here is the first place I went wrong, I should have clarified it, to avoid any misunderstandings later. But since Vlad is a friend and I did not want to see him lose money, I said let's wait and see what the door take looks like, thinking if he lost money on the show I would offer to pay maybe up to half the tab.
At the end of the night I was given $10 toward the tab. I knew that this would not come anywhere near covering the tab. I should have spoken to Vlad at this point. But I went wrong again and instead of addressing the situation, I decided it would be easier to forget to pay and hope the Schadenfreude staff were not held responsible.
It seems they were.
I have asked the band (I have no paypal ability at the moment) to send Vlad back the $10 he gave us. I do not think we should have to pay any more as the contract stated alcohol would be provided, not half price. I think it is unfortunate if this causes the show to be a loss BUT, I personally have lost over $1,000 on this tour, other promoters in the Midwest lost far more money due to smaller crowds, and I really feel it's too much for me to have to pay for alcohol that was meant to be included in the contract.
I did not intend to screw over my friends.
I am willing to apologise to the venue and explain it was not the fault of anyone associated with Schadenfreude, but my fault. I don't know what the fallout has been and I hope not too severe. I have no excuse really except for terminal exhaustion -- eight days on the road, six shows in seven nights, four hours of less sleep per night, border crossings and other intensely stressful issues -- and 2500 miles in a van with the same four people. But it is no excuse for forgetting to be professional. Had I challenged the "counter offer" to begin with, we could have brought our own booze in and saved everyone money. But I didn't, I regret not being honest with Vlad, and I regret any trouble the Schadenfreude staff have gotten into.
I have been away from LiveJournal so I have only seen one account of this incident but I hope I have cleared this up a bit. I hope that everyone I know will not be quick to assume the worst of me, I may have made a mistake but I did NOT intend to get anyone in trouble or steal from anyone. Do keep in mind too that although the event is *usually* free, the concert did have a cover charge, and if more of you showed up Vlad could easily have *made* money, not lost it. I am also disabling comments just because I will not be able to read them myself. Oops my internet cafe time is up, gotta go!
