Skinny shaming response

FAO [livejournal.com profile] diana_molloy and whoever else thinks body shaming doesn't happen to thin people:

On Fatphobia, Thin Privilege, Skinny Shaming And People's Right To Subjective Experience Whatever Their Body Size

Hope this gets passed on to the original author. Thank you [livejournal.com profile] sashagoblin!

Also calling attention to this link (http://everydayfeminism.com/2014/10/skinny-shaming-not-reverse-discrimination/), which I think makes the point that the original "thin shaming doesn't exist" blog post was after but got so very wrong.

That is an excellent post.

Body shaming exists for EVERY physical type. ALL OF THEM. We have reached an era where the "ideal" body is only achievable via Photoshop. Not even via surgery, because the "ideal" body now has characteristics that are quite literally impossible to achieve. And, unfortunately, there's a lot of shitty people out there who will shame ANYONE because they do not match an ideal that does not, and often cannot, exist.

And even if you do have that perfect combination of slim legs, flat tummy and boobs, guess what? You don't get out of shaming free because you're going to age, and then you'll be shamed for having wrinkles, unless you get plastic surgery, and then you'll get shamed for that.
Capitalism doesn't run on people thinking they're good enough so they don't need makeup / expensive moisturisers / push-up bras / diet plans / gym memberships / etc...

Even if you have that perfect combination, there are now images out there in which women are on their hands and knees and their stomachs are concave. That's impossible. It's called GRAVITY. Even if you are super-skinny your viscera are going to be pulled down toward the floor and your stomach will not be concave. Also, there are little folds and wrinkles that appear in flesh when you contract it, say by curling up in a ball or bending a certain way, and due to Photoshop people think that truly in-shape folks don't have that. They do, it's just been airbrushed out.

There have been a couple of Photoshop-retouching things that have been released over the past few years and they are MIND-BOGGLING.

Yup. And people of all sizes have cellulite, stretch marks...

Unfortunately, jargon like “the right to their subjective experience based on their body size” sets my teeth on edge.

How about, "Fat people, don't try to tell skinny people what being skinny is like", then?
